Cabinets of curiosities

An exhibition revealing some of the hidden gems of the Bridport Museum Collection.

Cabinets of curiosities were also known as wonder-rooms and were encyclopaedic collections objects whose range expanded as the world became further explored during renaissance and the European enlightenment. The term cabinet initially described a room rather than a piece of furniture. What began as a symbol of the aristocratic control and power would filter through to the scientific community and merchant classes and would develop in to the modern day museums of today.
