Skilful Hands: A celebration of local craftmanship as inspired by the paintings and murals of Fra Newbery
Francis Newbery’s paintings and murals celebrated the local crafts and industries of Bridport, depicting the dignity of the people and their work.
Fra believed that art should reflect the daily lives of people and be accessible to everyone. In paintings such as “Net Braiders,” Fra made the everyday labour of craft and industry look bright and inviting.
Through his work, Fra fostered pride in local traditions and inspired appreciation for the artisans who shape our communities. His legacy reminds us of the connections between art, culture, and the hard-working people who enrich our lives.
Our temporary display will be available to view from 29 October 2024 to 26 March 2025 and features Fra Newbery’s the Woodman and paintings by Henry Walton both artists depicted working people in the rural Dorset environment. There will also be textiles on display featuring the clothing of working people of the time including smocks, bonnets and clogs.
