New Display - Turner 250 - The Codd Turners

This year marks the 250th birthday of the man who is arguably the best know painter this country has so far produced, JMW Turner.

Here in Bridport, we have an unusual link to his fame and a new display of paintings to celebrate the Turner anniversary.  

In the early 1800’s, Turner visited Bridport and the harbour, painting the East cliffs showing a ship in trouble in choppy waters.

Captain Percy Codd, Bridport Museum’s founder  was a gifted amateur painter and huge fan of Turner, he spent many hours in the late 1890’s copying his hero’s famous paintings which were at that time on display at the National Gallery in London.

In 1932, Captain Codd gifted Bridport Museum and his large collection of paintings to the town of Bridport, and to mark this special year, we are proud to present a small sample of those copies on display, inspired by Turner
