It’s common for us to find items in our stores that we don’t know much about – but it’s less common for them to claim a Royal connection.

Several years ago, volunteer David Alcock attempted to research this travel blanket, reputed to have been knitted by Queen Victoria.  The blanket is in light brown and tan squares and in excellent condition.  On the blanket is a label with the following:

“This was knitted by Queen Victoria and used by her in her carriage. Given to A.L.C (?) by Mrs Baker whose cousin was employed in Buckingham Palace.”

We know Queen Victoria was a keen knitter and was known to have knitted scarves to be given to courageous Commonwealth soldiers;  however, David was unable to establish the authenticity of the blanket’s origin.
