To our twentieth century eyes, a woman becoming a magistrate might not seem to be an event to celebrate on International Women’s Day. Yet until 1919 there were no women in courts other than the accused!

Bridport’s first woman magistrate was appointed in 1923. Who she was, how she came to be appointed, her contribution and the degree to which she opened the door for others to follow, tells us a little more about the long struggle of women to be able to exercise hard-won rights.
